Position Summary
Optimal EV is seeking a Controls / Embedded Software Engineer to develop and support embedded vehicle control software for electric commercial vehicles.
The engineer will work primarily with MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow, CAN communication, and vehicle controllers to develop vehicle functions, integrate new components, troubleshoot issues, and support software releases across multiple vehicle platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop embedded control software using MATLAB/Simulink and Stateflow.
- Develop and maintain software for vehicle controllers including VCU and body control systems.
- Implement vehicle functions such as:
- Vehicle startup and shutdown
- Torque control
- Regenerative braking
- Drive mode logic
- Charging control
- Thermal system control
- Interlocks and safety monitoring
- Body and auxiliary functions
- Develop and maintain CAN communication interfaces.
- Integrate new components including:
- Inverters
- Motors
- Battery management systems
- Chargers and EVCCs
- DC/DC converters
- Thermal controllers
- Smart PDUs
- Body controllers
- Support implementation and integration of EV charging functionality.
- Support DIN 70121, ISO 15118-2, ISO 15118-20, and V2G development as required.
- Develop CAN signals, diagnostic messages, DTCs, and DIDs.
- Analyze CAN logs and vehicle data to troubleshoot software and system issues.
- Support vehicle testing and software validation.
- Develop configurable software that can support multiple vehicle platforms.
- Maintain software versions, calibration files, and release documentation.
- Support engineering, production, service, and supplier teams with software-related issues.
- Participate in vehicle commissioning and prototype development.
- Support software flashing, configuration, and diagnostic tools.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or related field.
- Experience or coursework involving embedded systems, controls, or automotive software.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and/or Stateflow.
- Understanding of CAN communication.
- Programming experience in C, C , Python, or similar languages.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to work with both software and physical vehicle systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing embedded software for automotive applications.
- Knowledge of electric vehicle powertrain systems.
- Experience with CAN, CANalyzer, or similar CAN tools.
- Familiarity with UDS diagnostics.
- Experience with model-based development and automatic code generation.
- Familiarity with charging systems and ISO 15118.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git.
- Familiarity with functional safety concepts.
What Success Looks Like
- Vehicle software is stable, configurable, and maintainable across multiple platforms.
- New vehicle components can be integrated without creating platform-specific software unnecessarily.
- Software issues are diagnosed efficiently using CAN and vehicle data.
- Releases are controlled, documented, tested, and reproducible.
